Starting on 3/30/2012 Hatena Color Stars that have been removed from entries can no longer be reused.
Currently Hatena Color Stars that are removed from entries (such as Flipnotes and comments) are credited back to user accounts and can be reused. After 3/30/2012 Hatena Color Stars that have been removed from entries can no longer be reused.
The reason for this change is to prevent Hatena Color Stars from being used in ways other than their original intended purposes. There have been some problems in our community with people adding and removing Hatena Color Stars from entries for malicious reasons which has devalued the rarity of these types of stars. We at Hatena believe that this change in the way Hatena Color Stars work is better suited to the way we want Hatena Color Stars to be used in our online community.
This change may cause you to take extra care when using your Hatena Color Stars, but we hope that you can better appreciate the difference of using and receiving these types of stars from now on. We believe that this change will reinforce the positive meaning Hatena Color Stars have and allow them to be used appropriately.
To prevent accidental use of your Hatena Color Stars, starting from 3/30/2012 a confirmation dialog window will appear when you add a Hatena Color Star to an entry on the Hatena website (for PC users only).

Today we introduced the Hatena Star Extension for Firefox that lets you add Stars to any website.
In the past you could add Stars only to blogs that had installed Hatena Star. From today, Firefox users can add Stars to any website just by installing an extension. To install the extension, click on the link below.

This extension is only for Firefox, but we hope to expand the use of “Hatena Star Everywhere” for other browsers as well in the near future.
With the Hatena Star Everywhere function, you can add Stars to any site by editing the Hatena Star SiteConfigWiki. You will need some technical knowledge to edit SiteConfigWiki using the instructions at the top of the page.
